Safety Driving Guide

For your safety use of rental car during your sightseeing and business trip in Hokkaido, please follow the following traffic rules. If you are involved in an accident, you should contact the departure store.

Rule 1. About wearing of seat belt.

In Japan, passenger in driver seat, front passenger seat and back passenger seat should all wear seat beat. Passenger in back seat who do not wear seat belt has a possibility of receiving a heavy blow inside the car, being thrown away from the car, or hitting and injuring the front seat passenger. To avoid such a risk, all passengers should wear seat belt. Child aged under 6 should be seated in child seat. (All of them are legal requirements) There are 3 types of child seat for children in different age.

According to the transportation regulation, there are 3 types of child seat.

Baby Seat For baby aged under 10 months
Child Seat For child aged between 10 months and 4 years old
Junior Seat For child aged between 4 and 10 years old

Rule 2. About illegal parking

In Japan, illegal parking which either causes accident or congestion will be punished heavily. Even in a short period of time, when your illegal parking car has been pasted with the “illegal parking sticker” by the police or civil parking patroller, you are required to pay the fine. Please use the car park even if you only park for a short time.

When your illegal parking car has been pasted with the “illegal parking sticker”,

  1. Please report to the police office stated in the sticker.
  2. Complete the required procedures and pay the fine.
  3. Please return the rental car after all procedures have finished.
    (When you return your car, please show the documents from the police and the receipt.)
    *We will contact the customer after receiving contact from the police

If you do not complete the procedures

The case will be reported to the police, the public safety commission, the rent-a-car association, and your request for rental will be reject by all Toyota Rental & Leasing as well as all companies under the rent-a-car association.

Rule 3. About the forbidden of drunk driving

In Japan, drunk driving is strictly prohibited. The drunk driver, person who offers the car, the alcohol and the passenger who knows the driver is drunk will be punished as following.
Moreover, the punishment when you cause an accident and fail to give aid to the victims (hit and run) is becoming more severe.

The punishment for drunk driving

Drunk driving Maximum 5 years jail and maximum fine of 1 million yen
Driving under the influence Maximum 3 years jail and maximum fine of 0.5 million yen
Reject to receive the alcohol test (breath test) Maximum 3 months jail and maximum fine of 0.5 million yen

The punishment for helping a driver commits drunk driving

For someone who in under the influence of alcohol and has the possibility to commit drunk driving the person who offers the car Maximum 5 years jail and maximum fine of 1 million yen
Maximum 3 years jail and maximum fine of 0.5 million yen

In case of drunk driving Maximum 5 years jail and maximum fine of 1 million yen
Maximum 3 years jail and maximum fine of 0.5 million yen
In case of driving under the influence Maximum 3 years jail and maximum fine of 0.5 million yen

The passenger, who knows the driver is drunk or is under the influence but still ask or request the driver to drive. Maximum 3 years jail and maximum fine of 0.5 million yen
Maximum 2 years jail and maximum fine of 0.3 million yen
The punishment for failure to give aid to the victims (hit and run) is becoming more severe. Maximum 10 years jail and maximum fine of 1 million yen
* In exception of the death or injury of the victim is not caused by the driver’s driving.
